Position Summary: 
The Tooling Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, repairing, troubleshooting, and inspecting plastic injection molds and tooling to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient production. This position performs preventative maintenance, minor repairs, mold cleaning, dimensional inspections, tooling adjustments, and troubleshooting while helping minimize production downtime and maintain tooling quality.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Read, interpret, and follow tooling work orders, maintenance instructions, and technical documentation.
  • Safely and efficiently disassemble, inspect, repair, clean, and reassemble plastic injection molds and tooling.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on molds, tooling, and related equipment.
  • Assist Maintenance Technicians and other technical personnel with tooling and equipment repairs as needed.
  • Troubleshoot tooling issues and identify opportunities to improve mold performance, reliability, and production efficiency.
  • Respond to tooling issues on the production floor, including making repairs or adjustments while a mold is installed in a production press when required to minimize downtime.
  • Use precision measuring equipment, including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore micrometers, and other inspection tools.
  • Operate tool room equipment safely and accurately, maintaining required dimensional tolerances.
  • Operate surface grinders to maintain critical details within approximately ±0.0002".
  • Troubleshoot and maintain hydraulic systems associated with molds and tooling.
  • Maintain tooling, tool room machinery, hand tools, and equipment in safe and proper working condition.
  • Clean tool room machinery and maintain an organized, safe, and efficient work area.
  • Assist with monitoring tooling components and replacement parts to help maintain appropriate inventory levels.
  • Help reduce machine and production downtime through timely troubleshooting, maintenance, and repairs.

Education and Experience: 
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on tool room experience involving plastic injection mold repair, mold maintenance, or tooling maintenance.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience operating hand-operated tool room machinery and equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of plastic injection molds, tooling components, mold construction, and component characteristics.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing injection molds and tooling.
  • Plastic injection molding or processing experience highly preferred.
  • Prototype tooling or toolmaking experience is a plus.
  • Trade school, technical training, apprenticeship, or college coursework in machining, tool and die, mold making, or a related field preferred.

Required Skills and Qualifications: 
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of mold and die components and their functions.
  • Ability to use precision measuring instruments accurately.
  • Proficiency operating common tool room machinery, including surface grinders, mills, lathes, and EDM equipment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and hot runner/manifold systems.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to document maintenance activities electronically.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
